The State Boards are responsible for conducting secondary and higher secondary examinations, setting syllabi, and ensuring the quality of education in their respective states.
National boards in India are responsible for conducting standardized examinations at the secondary and higher secondary levels, ensuring uniformity and quality in education across the country.
The Central Board of Secondary Education is a national level education board in India for public and private schools, controlled and managed by Union Government of India. It is the most popular Indian schooling board, with over 21,271 schools in India and 220 schools in 28 foreign countries affiliated with CBSE.
Schools affiliated with CBSE follow the NCERT curriculum. The primary school curriculum comprises vocabulary studies and social progress. Middle and senior school curricula include science, mathematics, English and supplementary languages in addition to arts, sports and other activities. Science, humanities and commerce streams are offered to senior school students.
CBSE conducts Continuous Comprehensive Assessments (CCE) from classes VI through X, and follows the grading system of evaluation. CBSE conducts the final examinations for class X (All India Secondary School Examination - SSE) and class XII (All India Senior School Certificate Examination - SSCE) every year in March.
The NIOS is a national education board under the Union Government of India and was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1989. NIOS aims to facilitate versatile education to all segments of society to increase literacy and enable flexible education. It is the largest open schooling system in the world, enrolling over 3.5 lakh students annually.
The NIOS board features the open basic education programme (OBE) for primary school students of classes III to VIII (divided into three levels). The class X course is called the secondary course. The senior secondary course (class XII) provides students with greater opportunities in science, humanities and commerce, split into five classes from which students selects one or two per class.
The NIOS board conducts OBE exams for primary school students. It administers secondary school examination (SSE) and senior secondary certificate examinations (SSCE) similar to the CBSE and the CISCE exam patterns.
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations is a privately held national-level Indian education board. Established in 1958, it is recognised as a “Non-Governmental Board of School Education” by the Constitution of India, with more than 2,300 schools in India and abroad affiliated to the CISCE.
CISCE offers a prescribed syllabus and reading list to its students. The CISCE curriculum focuses on imparting practical/application-based knowledge and analytical thinking to students. Science, humanities and commerce streams are offered to senior school students. Students are offered a large range of subject options which they may choose from.
Examinations are conducted for junior and middle school classes. The CISCE conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination for class X, the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination and the Certificate for vocational education (CVE) for Class XII.
The Cambridge Assessment International Education is an international education board part of the University of Cambridge. It offers examinations and qualifications to 10,000 schools in more than 160 countries.
The CAIE curriculum comprises primary, lower secondary and upper secondary to advanced levels which form the Cambridge Pathway. It offers a prescribed syllabus and recommended textbooks and reading lists. The curriculum stresses on English language and creative expression of students. Students aiming to apply to foreign universities often opt for this curriculum.
The CAIE board conducts the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) (or O-level) exams for Cambridge upper secondary students, and the AS and A level exams for the Cambridge Advanced students in June, November or March.
Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate is a non-profit academic foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Recognised by UNESCO, the IB board is accessible only to those schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate, Geneva. 185 IB World Schools are currently established in India, while the IB Diploma is taught at 146 schools.
The IB board offers the following educational programmes: the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for children aged three to 12, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16 and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Career-related Programme for students aged 15 to 19. The integrated curriculum imparts experiment-based education and offers greater flexibility to students by not fixing any reading lists or textbooks. Students aiming to apply to foreign universities often opt for this curriculum.
IB assessments vary depending on the program. The Diploma Programme (DP) includes examinations at the end of the two-year course, while the Career-related Programme (CP) involves a mix of examinations and coursework. Assessments focus on a combination of written exams, oral presentations, essays, projects, and practical tasks, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and understanding in diverse ways.
There are 32 different state boards of education in India. Each of these State secondary education boards have a variety of examination patterns and curricula.
The state board curricula, syllabi and prescribed textbooks are determined by the respective state governments, focusing on the particular state’s language, history and culture within the curriculum. Certain state boards prescribe NCERT books to aid students to prepare for various all-Indian examinations.
The examination pattern varies state to state. Exams are conducted in all classes, and each state board conducts the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations for class X students and the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) examinations for class XII students.
